The course is suitable to petroleum geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists and reservoir engineers working for oil exploration and development.

Course Objectives

  • Seismic Stratigraphy and Controls on Basin Stratigraphy.
  • The Models and Principles.
  • Sequence Definitions from wells and seismic.
  • Sequence Stratigraphy of Carbonates and relative sea level Lowstands.

COURSE OUTLINES

  • Chronostratigraphy versus Sequence Stratigraphy.
  • An Overview of evolution of sequence Stratigraphy, sequence stratigraphic models, sea level cycles and depositional systems.
  • Factors controlling depositional systems:
    • Sediment supply and productivity (Climatic).
    • Global Sea Level, i.e. Eustacy (Climatic).
    • Tectonics (Local and regional).
    • Autogenic and Allogenic.
  • Basic concepts of sedimentary cycles and events in Stratigraphy.
  • Stratal architecture and stratigraphic response.
  • Basin margin
  • Tools used in Sequence Stratigraphy, correlation methods and boundaries.
  • Constrains in Sequence Stratigraphic analysis.
  • Eustatic change and response in topset bed thickness and timing of maximum flooding surfaces.
  • Systems Tracts:
    • Low Stand (LST)
    • Transgressive (TST)
    • High Stand (HST)
  • Sequence Boundaries:
    • Unconformities (Exxon), Types 1 & 2.
    • Maximum Flooding (Galloway)
  • Accommodation and Basin Fill.
  • Basin Margin Concepts, Shelf break, Ramp, Rift, foreland basin, Growth faults.
  • Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy, Seismic stratal termination patterns and seismic facies.
  • Progradation, aggradation and retrogradation, shoreline trajectories.
  • The hydrocarbon play concept and petroleum potential in the different carbonate suites (lacustrine, karst domain, shallow marine platform, reef build-ups to deep marine settings) will be discussed and presented with examples.
  • Carbonate Sequence Stratigraphy.
  • Carbonate reservoir quality prediction in dolomitized build-ups and pore types qualification scales (large, medium and small) will be discussed and presented for modelling techniques.

Location

First day will be held at the Holiday Inn Maadi Hotel, in Cairo. The participants will fly the next day to Hurghada. The course will be continued in Hurghada.

 

Course Fees

Inclusive of refreshment and lunch at the Holiday Inn Maadi Hotel. Air Ticket Cairo/Hurghada return and accommodation in Hurghada.

 

Instructor Profile

Dr. M. DARWISH has obtained his B.Sc. in 1968 from Cairo University and Ph.D. in 1979 from Bucharest University. He is EREX Consultant for Sedimentology and Professor in Cairo University for Sedimentology and Petroleum Geology. Dr. Darwish has extensive experience on the geological provinces in Egypt. either in stratigraphic studies, sequence stratigraphy and facies analysis using seismic data, FMI stratigraphic & structural interpretation, geological field trips and supervising MSc and Ph.D Thesis. During the last thirty years, Dr. Darwish has offered appreciated consulting services with EREX on field geology, sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, field development studies for the oil companies in Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tanzania, Yemen, Chad, Mauretania, India and others.
