Field Seminar Southern Gulf of Suez and Northern Red Sea, Egypt Petroleum System, Plays, Structures and Reservoirs

Course & Field  Trip

March 19-23, 2023

Instructor : Dr. M. Darwish & Dr. Raed Badr

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Geologists, Geophysicists, Reservoir engineers, supervisors and managers

Course Organization

This course is tailored to provide and support an in-depth working knowledge considering the petroleum systems elements in the Gulf of Suez and northern Red Sea region. Having in consideration the rifting stages and sediment fill within the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Province, highlighting the pre- and syn-rift sequences, structural style, reservoirs and source rock.

This region will be shown and presented through the main tectono-stratigraphic events and their impact on accommodation and facies preservation. The sequence stratigraphic framework will be addressed through well defined field analogues.  Petroleum Systems including source/reservoir and trap styles will be discussed.

Course & Field Seminar Outlines

Day -1:  Travelling Cairo – Quseir with short Stops.

Meeting Point: Infront of EREX Office at 6.00am, El Salam Tower, 115 Misr Helwan Street, Maadi, Cairo.

On Road From Cairo to Quseir.

The first day covers the onshore geology of the western side of Gulf of Suez, Pre-Rift and Syn-Rift Succession along the main Galala Road (Short Stops for Paleozoic, Triassic, Cretaceous and Eocene new road cuts)

Zaafarana Accommodation Zone where Zaafarana (Warda) Oil Field encompassing Miocene Clastics derived from the main Wadi Araba incised systems.

St. Paul area,  depending on timing to reach Quseir before Sunset, as an example of Pre-Rift  (N-S) Structural Patterns where Nubia-type sandstones are seen as potential sedimentologic. Structural plays in the offshore settings.  On Road Issran Field (Oil from fractured carbonates, Miocene and Eocene ) will be overviewed.

(Overnight at Quseir)

Day 2:  Quseir area  (Sourthern Reaches of Gebel Duwi)

  • Wadi Ambagy across Pre-Cambrian Basement rocks, that onlapped by the Syn-Rift Miocene Systems.
  • Basement/Nubia sandstones, outcrops and contacts.
  • Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary sequences
  • Duwi Phosphates
  • Dakhla shales (oil source rocks)
  • Tarawan chalk
  • Thebes Formation (deep water turbidites)

(Overnight at Quseir)

Day 3: Quseir – Safaga (northern reaches of Gebel Duwi)

  • Um El Huetat area
  • Pre-Rift – Syn-Rift analogues and facies models.
  • Model of alluvial fan/fan delta complex, developed during the different stages of eustatic sea level falls (Possible grading to deep water fan system, offshore part)

(Overnight at Quseir)

Day 4: Wadi Hamadat (South of Quseir)

An Example of doubly plunging hanging-wall synclines.

Pre-Rift sequences enhanced the accommodation of fault progradation folding (Khalil and McClay, 2002).

Day 5:  Travelling Day back to Cairo, stop at southern reaches of Gebel El Zeit to be exposed on Gemsa oilseeps.

Number of Participants:  (15 persons), 3 Persons in each car.

EREX (3 persons; 2 instructors and one logistics) plus vehicle’s Drivers
